Week 5: Working Hard and Working Smart
Today’s Easy Task: Evaluate if our work builds or damages character
How to rock this task:
- Evaluate if the way you worked today built or damaged character
- Think of ways to improve your character
Today's Devotional:
Yesterday, we mentioned how we want to be hardworking like an ant and not lazy. In today’s task we will focus on building Godly character. We are not building character when we rush through work, leaving things incomplete, only working when it’s fun, lollygagging, and half doing our job. We are building character when we work persistently, with completeness, with honesty, with enthusiasm, with efficiency and with the ability to keep promises.
It’s important that we make decision that aligns ourselves with God’s Plan. That includes studying God’s word, praying God’s work, paying attention to God’s small voice and following our heart.
Ecclesiastes 11:6 says “In the morning, sow your seed, and in the evening do not withhold your hand; for you do not know which will prosper, either this or that, or whether both alike will be good.” As we minister, God will guide and protect. God knows how we should manage our affairs and know what best for us.
Honor God and trust God in every aspect of our life. If we lack wisdom, James 1:5 says ask God for wisdom and He will give it to us generously without judgment. If we have gone through improper means to gain wealth, such as debt and laziness, it will lead us to destruction. So let us take heed to God’s instruction so we can have abundant life (Ephesians 4:17-24).
We need to believe that all will work out even when it appears that heaviness is on us. Think about the story in Mark 4:35-41 that talks about when the disciples and Jesus was in the boat and a storm came which made the disciples afraid. Although Jesus was with them, they were fearful that they would not survive the storm. As Christian we shouldn’t allow circumstances to give us security, but rely on God to be our security. We must know that everything we workout for our good (Romans 8:28).
If we are honest and do the right thing even when no one is looking, God can trust us be a great worker for Him. It makes sense, because everything belongs to God. It’s God’s money and He is allowing us to use it. So we should look to God and not people for our source of money.
The purpose of working is to build Godly character. As we work we should show Godly speech, conduct, love, faith and purity. Those actions build character and character leads to discipline. A great rule of thumb when it comes to controlling our expenses is by categorizing 1/3rd of income to expenses, 1/3 of income to saving and investing (if you don’t have debt) and 1/3 of income to giving. Another great rule of thumb to get your daily pound of fruit and veggies everyday is include fresh/frozen smoothies, juice, salads and wraps in your meal plan.
Today’s Prayer:
God, You are a character builder and we need You to help us build character. Help us work persistently, with completeness, with honest, keeping our word, with enthusiasm and efficiency. Forgive us when we rushed through work, leaving it incomplete, only doing it when it’s fun, taking too long complete it, and half doing work. Help us to forgive others that fell short in their character as You have forgiven us. Help us to commit our ways to You forever and always. In Jesus Name, Amen.
